Hitting The So-Called “Pandemic Wall”
Hola amigxs,
We’re so thankful for all the support we received after our first issue of Pero Make It Newsy. You guys are the best! We’re back this week with more women in the news, a thoughtful personal piece from Maria Elena and more.
Let’s dive in!
After Losing My Job, I Struggled to Be Productive. Now, I’m Learning to Feel Less Guilty About It 💻
By Maria Elena Perez
I promised myself I would give myself a week to sulk about the layoff before I started on the job hunt. I was able to briefly shake off the guilt and practice some self-care that first week, but when the second week rolled along, I just couldn’t bring myself to be as productive when it came to applying to jobs as I would have liked.
And then the wave of guilt returned.

Child Care Providers, Most of Them Women of Color, Are Being Ignored in The Vaccine Rollout: Child care providers, who are taking care of America’s children, are sadly being affected twice over during this pandemic. A new piece in Vox reveals that providers, most of whom are women of color, are largely being left out of the vaccine rollout. Some states are not prioritizing child care providers as teachers in the rollout, while other states can’t guarantee they’ll get the vaccine if they are given priority. The situation is particularly infuriating as this group has suffered disproportionately when it comes to job loss in the last year.

SPLC Sues Florida, Alleging State Places “Undue Burden” on Women of Color Through Its Felony Disenfranchisement Law: In 2019, despite voters restoring the right to vote to those convicted of felonies, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that requires the formerly incarcerated to pay back restitution, fines, fees and court costs before regaining their right to vote. The move essentially imposed a modern-day poll tax that the Southern Poverty Law Center says is disproportionately affecting women of color. The SPLC is suing the state and claims the law violates the 19th Amendment, which grants women the right to vote.

California Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Make “Stealthing” Illegal: California Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D) introduced a bill that would categorize nonconsensual condom removal as sexual battery, The Washington Post reported. Under Garcia’s proposal, victims could also seek claims for damages. If passed, California would become the first state to make the reprehensible act illegal.
If you ask us, more states should follow suit.

Henlo again, hoomans! Mama and tia Nikki told me we had new frens sign up for my newsletter, so thank u and welcome!
Last week, mama asked me to be her valentine and it made me SO HAPPY! But on Valentine’s Day, all she did was give papa attention. Paw-don me, but I thought I would get the most attention ‘cause I’M THE VALENTINE. All I got was a puppucino and some pets.
This was insulting. I shouldn’t have to BEG for my valentine to give me the Valentine’s Day treatment I deserve (even though I ALWAYS get my way when I use my beggin’ eyes).
