20 Women-Owned Businesses to Support Now and Always
For Women’s History Month, we decided to highlight four unique women-owned small businesses a week that we hoped our readers would check out and support. Showing support for women-owned businesses is vital to making sure they succeed and that their communities succeed as well.
According to the National Association of Women Business Owners, more than 11.6 million businesses are owned by women in the United States, including 5.4 million that are majority-owned by women of color. These businesses employ nearly 9 million people and generate $1.7 trillion as of 2017.
Here’s the full list of businesses we hope you’ll check out, including four new picks for the final week of March.
Agapé Studio: If you’re looking for dainty jewelry pieces inspired by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians, then Agapé Studio is the store for you. This French jewelry brand was the brainchild of Emma Fournier and a group of friends who wanted to create a collection inspired by the past. The best part? They ship free worldwide.
Big Sky Soap: This Arizona-based business is run and owned by a Native American woman. Owner Jennifer makes all her products herself, including soaps, scrubs and creams. Big Sky Soap is a great place to grab unique, cold-press soaps that make perfect gifts.
Cee Cee’s Closet NYC: This NYC-based, African-inspired fashion store has a plethora of colorful headwraps, headbands, bonnets and more. Cee Cee’s Closet also features beautiful masks that pair with their headwraps and stunning clothing selections. This small brand is co-owned by two sisters who linked up with Nigerian tailors to find protective, yet fashionable headwear to protect their hair.
Concrete Geometric: Say goodbye to those sad-looking planters your plant babies are living in and upgrade them to a new homemade by Concrete Geometric. This Latina-owned shop wants plant lovers to make the switch from plastic pots for their plants to concrete pots your plants will love.
Fanesha Fabre Art: Calling all New Yorkers, this is your go-to shop for art, stickers and pins. Artist Fanesha Fabre not only sells her amazing art, but her shop also has New York City-esque stickers and pins you’ll be sure to love, like this Yerrr coffee mug and this bodega pin. And if you’re not from New York, we know you’ll find something from this store that you’ll love.
GRL Collective: This Latina-owned lifestyle brand makes badass clothes, jewelry and other products for an amazing cause. GRL Collective donates 20 percent of its profits to fund girls’ education in India and gives $5 to Black Lives Matter and RAICES Texas when you purchase one of their Lucha or kids Lucha tees, respectively.
HarmonyByHaley: This tiny Etsy shop will quickly become your go-to for embroidered feminist apparel. HarmonyByHaley owner Haley Harmon has become a Tik Tok sensation with her girl power crewnecks and empowering stickers. Act fast though, her merch sells pretty quickly.
Hija de tu Madre: The Latina-owned clothing and accessories shop celebrates every aspect of being Latina. The online store has everything from embroidered denim jackets to t-shirts and sweatshirts, and even sells cute accessories and jewelry.
Jack & Bec: The female-founded company based in San Antonio gives a 1970’s retro vibe with cute clothes, accessories and art promoting body positivity and celebrating women.
Jen Zeano Designs: This Texas-based shop is for all Latinas. The cute online shop, which screams girl power and Latina magic, has t-shirts, sweatshirts, accessories and stationery.
Kaiona Swimwear: This Hawai’i-based ethical swimwear shop is the brainchild of Earth-conscious Kalena. Her brand’s handmade swimwear uses recycled materials (including recycled nylon) and eco-friendly ink. The best part? Kaiona one-pieces and bikinis are stunning and come in a range of sizes.
Luiny: Luiny Rivera makes beautiful, whimsical jewelry that you’ll want to get your hands on. The Puerto Rican jewelry designer, who is now based in New York, makes all kinds of accessories — from colorful rings to stunning earrings.
Maude: This sexual wellness company is all about modern intimacy. The company, which was founded by Éva Goicochea, was built on inclusivity and simplicity for the modern consumer. The shop has everything from bath products, candles, oils and much more.
owen+sage: Looking for cute, sustainable clothes for your mini? owen+sage is a woman-owned small business in Massachusetts that has loads of clothes, toys and books for babies and toddlers. We especially love their inclusive book section that includes Matt De La Peña’s “Last Stop on Market Street” and Chelsea Clinton’s “She Persisted.”
Pipcorn: Want a healthy snack that you’ll actually enjoy? Try these heirloom corn snacks from Pipcorn! The company was founded by brother and sister duo Jen and Jeff Martin, and uses simple, clean ingredients that are easy to digest. They carry a range of snacks like popcorn, cheeseballs, snack crackers and more in a variety of different flavors.
Semicolon Bookstore: Calling all book nerds in the Chicago area. Semicolon is Chicago’s only Black woman-owned bookstore. This fantastic bookstore is not only an amazing place to get all your reading must-haves, but it also launched a literacy non-profit that provides books to Chicago Public School students.
Stay Forever: This cute gift shop located in Ridgewood, Queens is your hidden gem for gifts, cards and candles. The brick-and-mortar shop is run by two amazing women and mothers. From bath care to accessories and even gifts for children, you’ll find great gifts at this fun store.
Valfré: This shop based in Los Angeles was founded by Mexican-born artist, Ilse Valfré. Her psychedelic art is showcased in everything she creates like art and home decor, technology, accessories and more. Valfré’s designs can also be found at her smoke shop.
Wasi Clothing: This Bolivian-American brand is based in L.A. and run by Vanessa Acosta. The brand’s name WASI comes from the Quechuan word for “home,” the last word translated to Acosta by her late grandfather in Bolivia. All the beautiful items at Wasi are handmade and in limited quantity.
Wing on Wo & Co. (W.O.W.): The oldest shop in New York’s Chinatown has stunning porcelain ware from tea sets to painted flower pots and stunning drop earrings. W.O.W is run by Mei Lum, the great-great-granddaughter of the original owners. Along with running the shop, Lum launched the W.O.W. Project, which aims to preserve Chinatown’s culture and history.
